FIRE RESTORATION VOLUNTEER WEEKENDS

Our fire restoration is coming along; slowly but surely! Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we’ve already reached 40% of our crowdfunding goal – every contribution is step towards recovery. At the same time, we’ve been busy on the ground, working with our local irrigation designer to survey the orchard site for the redesign. We have also teamed up with our good friend Chloe’s new startup, collecting soil samples to create an inoculated biochar soil treatment – an essential step in biologically revitalising the land after the fire!

On top of this support, we’ve been blown away by the number of people eager to lend a hand in person. To make it happen, we’re hosting a series of volunteer weekends in the coming months – an opportunity for you to get your hands in the soil, be part of the restoration, and connect with the community. We’d love to have you join us!

You’ll find the full details – including what we’ll be working on, what to bring, and accommodation options at the Sign Up Form – click the button down below…

  • WEEKEND #1 – 12-13 APRIL 2025:
Our first weekend will focus on clearing out the orchard – if you join us for this, we’ll be collecting and removing all the burnt irrigation systems, piping, and debris from the orchard. If we make good progress with this, we can also begin taking out burnt trees.
  • WEEKEND #2 – 03-04 MAY 2025:
The second volunteer session will be more intensive – we will be chopping the burnt trees, removing them from the orchard, and cutting the branches and pieces to smaller sizes. This will entail more physical work, including digging, cutting, chopping, and carrying branches etc.
  • WEEKEND #3 – 17-18 MAY 2025:
Provided that we have managed to clear the orchard in time, in the third round we intend to prepare the site for new plantings. Volunteers who assist us with this will be digging beds to be planted in; raking, collecting and removing weeds; and possibly laying out new irrigation.

Sababa Farm is nestled in the Piket-Bo-Berg mountains, about 150 km north of Cape Town (a ±2-hour drive with some great padstals along the way).

We’ll provide refreshments and basic vegetarian meals, but feel free to bring extra snacks or foods if you like. Our rough schedule will be something along the lines of:

  • 9 AM – 12 PM: Morning restoration session
  • 12 PM – 1 PM: Lunch break
  • 1 PM – 4 PM: Afternoon restoration session

You’re most welcome to camp at Sababa, or if you prefer a cosy stay, there are lovely nearby accommodation options – just book early to secure your spot! Accommodation outside the farm is at your own expense:

Closer to the time, we will be sending out more details to everyone who has signed up. We hope to see you there!
