Lavender

Lavandula – Believed to be antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, it has been historically used for treating anxiety, insomnia, depression, and restlessness.
Use for aromatic decoration, drying and making your own scented potpourri, or keeping in the bathroom or linen cupboard as a natural fragrance enhancer.

Penny-gum Eucalyptus
R30 per pack

Eucalyptus Cinerea – With its strong scent and shimmering leaves, makes for a great addition to floral arrangements.
Use as a base for bouquets or in flower vases, or hang in the shower for refreshing steam aromatherapy.

Culinary Herbs

Basil

Fragrant, tangy herb with a slightly sweet profile. An essential ingredient in many Mediterranean dishes. Combine with tomato for an intense flavour profile.

Lemon Leaf
R15 per pack

Interchangeable with lemongrass in recipes such as curries; Lemon Leaves pair well with mint, parsley, basil, garlic, olive oil, vinegar, and pistachios; and can be blanched and used to infuse tea. Also an ideal garnish for desserts like lemon cakes.

Agathosma Betulina – High in bioflavonoids, vitamins and antioxidants, Buchu aids in the body’s ability to function effectively.
Traditional Uses:
Boosting the body’s biological responses to compounds like allergens, viruses, and carcinogens; general relief from general stomach problems and digestive disturbances; treatment of kidney and urinary tract diseases; relief from rheumatism; and as a diuretic.

Kankerbos

Lessertia Frutescens – One of the most respected African medicinal herbs, it has a reputation as strong immune booster.
Traditional Uses:
Amongst many others, treatment for colds, flus, fever, poor appetite, indigestion, gastritis, peptic ulcer, dysentery, coughs, asthma, chronic bronchitis, kidney and liver conditions, rheumatism, urinary tract infections, stress and anxiety.

African Wormwood

Artemisia Afra – Also known as Wildeals and Umhlonyane, this highly aromatic cousin of European Wormwood is a widely used an recognised herb across various cultures, revered for its various properties.
Traditional Uses:
Amongst many others, mainly as treatment for coughs, colds, fever, loss of appetite, colic, headache and earache.

Famously high in iron, this Brassica is wonderful when eaten fresh in a wrap; steamed; stir-fried; or used in curries, bakes and roasts. Goes excellently with garlic, black pepper, ginger, balsamic vinegar, basil or citrus zest.

Each week we collect donations for bags of staple foods, include as much of our own surplus produce as possible, and donate to various community-run soup kitchens, feeding schemes in Cape Town and Piketberg.
